Consider a leased line if your business depends heavily on internet connectivity.

Router and Firewall

The router connects your network to the internet. A business-grade router also includes firewall functionality to control what traffic enters and leaves your network. Avoid consumer-grade routers — they are not built for multiple simultaneous users or business security requirements.

Network Switch

A switch connects all your wired devices together. For business use, a managed switch allows you to create VLANs (virtual networks), monitor port activity, and troubleshoot problems remotely. Unmanaged switches work but provide no visibility or control.

Wireless Access Points

Structured cabling is the physical foundation of your network. Quality Cat6 cable, properly installed and tested, provides reliable connectivity and is largely maintenance-free. Poor cabling causes intermittent problems that are expensive to diagnose and fix.

Network Attached Storage (NAS)

For businesses with significant on-premises file storage needs, a NAS device provides a centralised, redundant storage solution. Modern NAS devices from Synology and QNAP also support backup to the cloud.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using a home router for business use: Home routers cannot handle multiple users, lack business security features, and have no support when they go wrong.

Not segmenting guest WiFi: Guest WiFi must be on a separate network from your business devices. A simple misconfiguration can expose all your internal resources to guests.

Skimping on cabling: Cheap or poorly installed cabling causes endless intermittent problems. Do it once, do it right.

No network documentation: Knowing what is on your network, where cables go, and what IP addresses are assigned is essential for maintenance and troubleshooting. Most businesses have no documentation at all.

No spare hardware: For critical infrastructure, keeping a spare switch or access point saves significant time when hardware fails unexpectedly.
