WiFi Troubleshooting Guide: Why Is My Business WiFi So Slow?
Before calling an engineer, try these systematic steps to diagnose and often fix common business WiFi problems yourself. A guide from our Essex network specialists.
Slow or unreliable WiFi is one of the most common complaints we hear from businesses across Essex and Suffolk. Before assuming you need new equipment, it is worth working through the most common causes systematically.
Step 1: Check Whether It Is WiFi or Broadband
The first question is whether the speed problem is with your WiFi network or your internet connection. Connect a laptop directly to your router with a network cable and run a speed test at speedtest.net. If the wired speed is also slow, the problem is with your broadband, not your WiFi. Contact your ISP.
If wired speeds are fine but WiFi is slow, read on.
Step 2: Check Signal Strength
Most wireless problems are caused by poor signal. Check the WiFi signal bars on the affected device. If signal is weak, you are either too far from the access point, or there is something blocking the signal — thick walls, metal cabinets, or other equipment.
Try moving closer to your router or access point and test again. If performance improves significantly, you need either better placed access points or additional ones to cover your space properly.
Step 3: Check How Many Devices Are Connected
Consumer-grade routers (and some cheap business ones) struggle when many devices are connected simultaneously. Check your router admin panel for the number of connected clients. If you have 30 devices on a router rated for 20, performance will suffer.
Business-grade access points like the Ubiquiti UniFi range handle far more simultaneous connections than consumer equipment.
Step 4: Look for Interference
WiFi uses radio frequencies that can be disrupted by other devices. Common culprits include:
- Microwave ovens (2.4GHz band)
- Neighbouring businesses' WiFi networks using the same channel
- Wireless cameras, baby monitors, and cordless phones
- Bluetooth devices in high concentration
Try connecting to the 5GHz network if available (look for a network name with "5G" in it). The 5GHz band is faster and less congested for devices within range.
Step 5: Check for Outdated Firmware
Router and access point manufacturers regularly release firmware updates that fix performance and stability issues. Log in to your router admin panel and check whether a firmware update is available. Apply it during a quiet period.
Step 6: Restart Your Equipment
It sounds basic, but power cycling your router, switch, and access points in sequence (router last, wait 60 seconds between each) resolves a surprising number of issues caused by memory leaks or stuck connections.

- An undersized or poorly positioned WiFi system for your building
- Interference that requires spectrum analysis to identify
- A faulty piece of equipment
- A network configuration problem
